In the movie, the character Eastwoods corpsman saw an effort to evacuate a wounded enemy soldier from the battlefield. Feeling like an act of treason, the corpsman was shot in the back. Later, when questioned about how the school girls got injured, said the corpsman who was shot trying to move the wounded enemy (Confederate) soldier.
